Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our genomic testing services

General Questions

Does the test require a blood draw?

No. All our tests can be done using a non-invasive buccal (internal cheek) swab. It is painless, easy to perform, and takes less than a minute. It is completely safe for children of all ages.

Will this test diagnose a specific disease or medical condition?

No. These panels are functional genomic tests, designed to identify predispositions and optimise health, wellbeing and growth, not to diagnose medical pathology or diseases. The results provide a risk profile and a roadmap for lifestyle optimisation. Always consult with a pediatrician for medical diagnoses.

What is the ideal age for these tests?

While genomics do not change (meaning you can test a baby or a teenager), our reports and recommendations are tailored specifically for the developmental physiology of children and teenagers aged 6 to 17. This is the window where lifestyle interventions, nutrition, and habit-building have the most profound impact on long-term development.

How long does it take to get the results?

Once the sample arrives at the lab, it typically takes 3 to 4 weeks to process the DNA and for our team to generate your personalised report. You will receive a notification as soon as your report is ready.

What happens if the sample fails?

Not a problem. While rare, a sample may occasionally fail due to insufficient sample collection (not enough cheek cells). If this happens, we arrange for a replacement kit immediately to collect a new sample at no added cost.

How is this different from a standard blood test at the GP?

A blood test is a snapshot of your child's health right now (e.g., for detecting infection or anemia). Our panels look at the blueprint, identifying potential weaknesses in immunity or detoxification before they manifest as symptoms. It is proactive, whereas a blood test is often reactive.

Is my child's genetic data secure?

Absolutely. We do not sell, lease, or rent your child's individual-level personal information or genetic data to any third party, insurance company, or employer. We use an ISO certified Lab with the relevant accreditations.

Do I need to re-take this test as my child grows?

No. Your child's DNA sequence does not change. The results from our test are valid for their entire life. However, how you apply the advice (epigenetics) may change as they move from childhood to adolescence.

Core Foundations Panel

What is "Methylation" and why does it matter for my child?

Methylation is a biochemical process that happens in every cell—it's like the gears turning the engine. It affects energy, mood, and repair. If your child has a "slow" methylation gene (like MTHFR), they may struggle to process Folic Acid, leading to fatigue or mood issues. We tell you exactly which form of B-vitamins they need.

Will this tell me if my child is going to be a pro athlete?

It won't predict if they will be an Olympian, but it will tell you where their natural advantages lie. We identify if they are genetically dominant in Power/Speed (sprinting, football) or Endurance (cross-country, swimming), helping them choose sports where they will naturally excel.

Can this prevent sports injuries?

It has potential to be a powerful prevention tool. We analyze the genes responsible for collagen structure and tendon strength. If your child has a "soft tissue injury" risk, we recommend specific pre-hab exercises and nutritional support (like Collagen and Vitamin C) to strengthen their ligaments.

Should my child switch sports based on the results?

Not necessarily. Passion is as important as genetics. However, if an endurance-built child wants to be a sprinter, they will need to train differently than a natural power athlete. This report helps tailor the training, not just pick the sport.

Fueling the Growing Body Panel

Does this test for food allergies?

It tests for genetic intolerances and sensitivities, not acute allergies (IgE). For example, it can tell you if your child is genetically predisposed to Celiac disease (Gluten) or Lactose Intolerance, but it will not tell you if they are allergic to peanuts or strawberries (which is an immune reaction).

My child is a very picky eater. Is this genetic?

It often is. We test for "Bitter Taste Perception" genes. Children with this variant taste bitterness in vegetables much more intensely than adults. Knowing this helps you change how you cook (e.g., roasting vs. steaming) to make food more palatable for them.

Can this test help with childhood obesity or weight management?

Yes. We analyse how your child metabolises Saturated Fats vs. Carbohydrates. Some children gain weight easily on a high-carb diet, while others are more sensitive to fats. We provide a "macronutrient plate" guide tailored to their metabolism.

Will this help with my child's stomach aches?

Unexplained stomach aches are often linked to inflammation or an inability to break down certain food compounds. By identifying these triggers genetically, we can help you remove the irritants, potentially resolving the discomfort.

Will the report tell me what supplements to give my child?

Yes. The report includes a personalised "Nutrient & Lifestyle" section. If a genetic variant increases the need for Magnesium or Vitamin B12, we will highlight this so you can adjust their diet or supplementation accordingly.

Cognitive Potential & Mental Resilience Panel

Does this test diagnose ADHD or Autism?

No. Genetic testing cannot diagnose ADHD or Autism. However, it can identify imbalances in dopamine and serotonin pathways that are common in neurodivergent children. This helps parents support the child's brain chemistry naturally, regardless of a formal diagnosis.

My child is very anxious. What can genetics tell us?

We look at the COMT gene (often called the "Worrier vs. Warrior" gene). This determines how fast their brain clears stress hormones. If they clear them slowly, they may be more prone to anxiety. We provide strategies to help them "flush" these hormones effectively.

Can we use the results to get medication?

This is a tool to support the brain, not a medical treatment prescription. Many parents use these insights to optimise nutrition (e.g., Magnesium for sleep, Omega-3s for focus) which can sometimes reduce the need for higher doses of medication. Always work with your doctor on medication changes.

Will this help with my teenager's mood swings?

Adolescence is a hormonal storm. If your teen has genetic variants that affect Serotonin production (the "happy" chemical), they may feel these shifts more intensely. We can suggest lifestyle habits (like morning light exposure) and foods to help stabilise their mood.

Does sugar really affect behavior?

Genetically, yes. Some children have variants in dopamine receptors that make them crave sugar more intensely for a "dopamine hit," followed by a harder crash. We help you identify if your child is a "Sugar Seeker" and how to manage those cravings.

Is caffeine bad for teen athletes?

It depends on their CYP1A2 gene. Some metabolize caffeine quickly and get a performance boost; others metabolize it slowly, leading to anxiety and heart palpitations that hurt performance. We tell you which category your teen falls into.
